Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and James Lankford have proposed an immigration deal that would allow up to 35,000 illegal aliens to arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border every week before triggering border controls.
The deal would maintain Biden’s catch and release policy and restrict the use of humanitarian parole at the border.
It faces opposition from House Speaker Mike Johnson and several Senate Republicans, including Marsha Blackburn, J.D. Vance, Ted Cruz, and Josh Hawley.
The deal includes provisions to increase legal immigration, provide work permits to certain groups, and offer taxpayer-funded lawyers to specific individuals.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has privately lobbied Senate Republicans to support the Schumer-Lankford deal, but some Republicans, including Blackburn, have expressed opposition to legalizing illegal immigration.
