Donald Trump’s recent comments suggesting that he would encourage Russia to attack NATO allies if they didn’t pay up have drawn criticism and concern.

The comments, made during a weekend speech, have been seen as too friendly towards a dangerous adversary.

Trump recounted a conversation where he indicated he would not protect NATO allies who hadn’t paid their bills, which has caused controversy.

“One of the presidents of a big country stood up and said, ‘Well sir, if we don’t pay and we’re attacked by Russia, will you protect us?’ I said, ‘You didn’t pay? You’re delinquent?’ He said, ‘Yes, let’s say that happened.’ No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want,” Trump said.

“You gotta pay. You gotta pay your bills,” he said.

Despite this, the GOP officials reportedly showed indifference to his remarks.

The Senate passed legislation providing aid for Ukraine, in opposition to Trump’s stance, but its passage in the House is uncertain.
