A recent survey conducted for the Los Angeles Times revealed that 50% of U.S. adults believe California is in decline.
Political polarization is evident, with 48% of Republicans viewing the state as “not really American.”
California maintains its reputation as a trendsetter, particularly among young people, with 6 in 10 adults nationwide acknowledging its positive impact.
Christian Bourque, Leger’s executive vice president and the poll’s supervisor, said, “If you are a more conservative American, you basically do not like California.”
“Of course, we all expected some of that, but the differences are actually quite striking,” continued Bourque.
However, economic trends and high living costs have led to criticism, with 8 in 10 California residents and nearly 9 in 10 in the rest of the country finding it too expensive.
The state’s image is also influenced by political divisions, with conservative attacks and criticism impacting public opinion.
Despite this, Californians generally view their state more favorably than the rest of the country.
