Late night host Johnny Carson onced highlighted a controversy from Joe Biden’s past Senate campaign on his show.
Biden had been accused of plagiarizing speeches, including directly paraphrasing a British politician without attribution.
Carson joked that Biden had reassured his staff with the line “we have nothing to fear but fear itself,” cleverly tying the plagiarism controversy to FDR’s famous quote.

“One of the Democratic candidates is Senator Joseph Biden. Have you seen the problem he’s been having?” Carson said.
“He went around and made a speech. And apparently, he quoted, I think it was a British politician, took his speech and kind of paraphrased it as his own. And then the press got on him. And then he was charged also with taking part of Bobby Kennedy’s speeches.”
“And Biden says, not to worry, he reassured his staff. He said, ‘we have nothing to fear, but fear itself,’” he joked.
The incident Carson referred to involved Biden using passages from Neil Kinnock’s speech without proper attribution and additional allegations of borrowing from Bobby Kennedy speeches.
Though decades old, Carson’s monologue still resonates as it drew attention to Biden’s history of plagiarism allegations from his time as a Senator.
